All About Six Flags

Six Flags is the biggest amusement park corporation on the planet based on the amount of their parks, and is the fourth biggest in terms of attendance. The company owns over 20 parks located exclusively in North America. These parks include family entertainment centers, water parks, thrill parks, and theme parks. All Six Flags properties combined hosted over 25 million guests in the 2008 fiscal year.

The company started in the state of Texas. Its name is a continuation of its first property, which was known as “Six Flags Over Texas”. The company’s headquarters are located in Manhattan, New York City. However, it also has a base in Grand Prairie, Texas. However, hard times have recently fallen on the company, and on June 13, 2009, the company declared bankruptcy.

The name of the company is derived from the six flags that had flown over the state of Texas. These flags include the United States of America, the Confederate States of America, the Republic of Texas, Mexico, France, and Spain.

Six Flags History

The chain began in 1961 with the formation of its first park, Six Flags Over Texas, by Angus G. Wynne, who was a rich oil mogul. The park initially featured a stagecoach ride, a pirate themed ride, western shows, a railroad, a gondola, and a Native American village. The train is the only ride still in operation.

The first Six Flags park was sold to the Pennsylvania Railroad Corporation in 1966, because the company was interested in non-railroad pursuits. This ushered in a new era of growth, because the new owners had an almost endless supply of capital. Six Flags Over Georgia, and Six Flags Over Mid-America, along with Six Flags Over Texas, were the only parks built by the company. However, the company’s growth continued as they acquired many other independent parks. The company purchased Astroworld, Great Adventure, and Magic Mountain. However, the company decided to sell its assets to the Bally Manufacturing Corporation. However, the company still managed to obtain the Great America theme park.

As a result of the company’s acquisition of Great America, they were allowed rights to the Looney Tunes, who were still owned by Warner Brothers. However, the Time Warner Corporation garnished a large amount of leverage in the company in a very short amount of time. By 1991, Time Warner owned 50 percent of the company’s shares. The rest of the shares were split between Wertheim Schroder & Company and the Blackstone Group. Time Warner acquired the remaining stocks in 1993, and changed the company’s name to Six Flags Theme Parks, Inc. The company bought the Fiesta Texas theme park in San Antonio.

Becoming a Theme Park

The company originally operated as part of the Tierco Group, which was based in Oklahoma. At this time, the company’s main focus was on real estate. However, during the beginning of the 80s, the company decided to shift their focus to theme parks. Therefore, they acquired the Frontier City theme park in 1982. The park cost a mere 1.2 million dollars, which is extremely cheap.
