History of ShopRite

ShopRite is a major supermarket with more than 200 locations in Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland. In addition to being the largest employer in the state of New Jersey, ShopRite is the United States’ biggest retailer-owned cooperative. Started in 1946 when several independent grocers joined to form the Wakefern Food Corporation, the store later became known as ShopRite in 1951.

The store’s initial success enticed many more grocers to join the cooperative, which eventually led to expansions in every facet of its operations. After only ten years, the cooperative boasted more than 70 members and sales exceeding $100 million annually. Today, ShopRite continues to operate under the umbrella of the Wakefern Corporation, whose headquarters are in Keasbey, New Jersey. The cooperative has 45 members, and many of the ShopRite stores are family-owned and operated, as they were in the early years.
