Sears Tower Information

The Sears Tower, lately renamed Willis Tower, has served as a proud architectural achievement for Chicago since its construction in 1973. Rising over the city at 1,450 feet and 110 stories high, Willis Tower held the honor of being the tallest building in the world until 1998. It continues, however, to hold that distinction in the U.S. In 1971, when the construction of the tower was just underway, Sears Roebuck & Company was the world’s largest retailer. They had the building erected in order to provide headquarter office space for the management of their prodigious workforce of 350,000 employees. In 2009, Willis Group Holding, Ltd. acquired the right to rename the building after leasing out a majority of the space inside. Despite the official change of name, Chicagoans still affectionately refer to it as the Sears Tower.

Visitors to the tower can enjoy the 360 degree panoramic views from the Skydeck, an observatory located on the 103rd floor of the building. When the skies are clear, distances of 40-50 miles are capable of being beheld. High powered telescopes help to enhance the views. A recent addition to the site, a walk out ledge, allows visitors to look directly down on the city from 1,353 feet above. The Skydeck also features an exhibit inside showing various photos from present day and historical Chicago.
