Learn About Pantene

Information on Pantene

Pantene is a hair care brand manufactured by Proctor & Gamble that was launched as a shampoo in Europe 1947. Its main ingredient is panthenol, a form of pantothenic acid, or Vitamin B5. Beneficial use of panthenol in skin and hair care was discovered during research on treatment of burn wounds during World War II. Panthenol penetrates hair, providing moisturizing properties and improving elasticity. Consumer demand in the United States prompted Proctor & Gamble to expand the market to America. Development of its Asian market has made it a global brand.

The Pantene collection today includes shampoos, conditioners, styling solutions and treatment products. It also offers seventeen collections for hair including Pro-V Restoratives, Anti-frizz, Moisture Renewal, Color Revival and Classic Care. Each collection features shampoos and conditions that are created to enhance hair beauty or solve hair problems. Several of the collections also include hair treatment and styling products. Pantene is sold throughout the world in Asia, the Middle East, Europe, Australia and New Zealand, Latin America and North America.

Proctor & Gamble was started in 1837 in Cincinnati, Ohio, by two Irish immigrants, William Proctor, a candle-maker, and James Gamble, a soap-maker. Their philosophy was to provide honest and direct dealing with the consumer, and provide the highest quality product for use. They created one of the first brands, Ivory Soap. Innovative new products by Proctor & Gamble include Crest, introduced in 1955 as the first fluoride toothpaste, Tide laundry soap and Pampers disposable diapers. Through their own research and by corporate acquisitions, Proctor & Gamble markets some of the most well-known and profitable products in the world. Pantene is one of the company’s 24 brands that produce more than one billion dollars in sales annually.

In 1887 Proctor & Gamble created a profit-sharing scheme for their employees in an attempt to cultivate corporate loyalty and avoid strikes. They were one of the first companies to use consumer market research for product development, based on their commitment to understand consumer needs and respond with appropriate products. In the 1950’s they created a consumer relations department to help answer questions about products and solve quality of merchandise problems.

Proctor & Gamble has several philanthropic projects, including a campaign for safe drinking water, and its Live, Learn, Thrive program. This broad initiative focuses on helping children gain access to healthy living conditions, education and essential medical care including vaccines.
