Panera Bread Information
The beginnings of Panera Bread® were started in 1981, when Louis Kane and Ron Shaich established Au Bon Pain Co., Inc. The company was successful in the east coast and internationally, and it soon became the leading bakery-café corporation.
In 1993, after making a name for itself, Au Bon Pain Co., Inc. purchased Saint Louis Bread Company®. This purchase gave the company a chain of 20 bakery-cafes in the St. Louis area. After reorganizing and updating aspects of Saint Louis Bread Co., the name was eventually changed to Panera Bread.
Continual growth and success indicated that Panera Bread had the potential to be a dominant player in the bakery-café industry. However, this endeavor required significant financial and management resources.
In May 2009, major changes were made to Au Bon Pain Co., Inc. All of the company’s business units were sold, except for Panera Bread. The overall corporation was then renamed Panera Bread.
Since that time, Panera Bread bakery-cafes have quickly spread across the country. As of December 29, 2009, there were 1,380 establishments in 40 states and in Canada from Panera Bread®, Saint Louis Bread co. ® and Paradise Bakery & Café®.
With it’s growing popularity, Panera Bread has established over $1 billion in shareholder value, and it’s stock has increased thirteen-fold. The company has also received national recognition. Panera Bread was named one of Business Week’s “100 Hot Growth Companies.” AdvertisingAge recognized Panera Bread as one of “America’s Hottest Brands,” and Health Magazine named the company’s food “#1 Healthiest Eating on the Go.”
