Pall Mall

History of Pall Mall

The Pall Mall cigarette franchise got its start in 1899 through the a corporation known as the Butler & Butler Company. The name “Pall Mall” is actually pronounced and should sound like “pell mell,” as this is the way the very first television and radio ads dictated it. Initially, these cigarettes were made as an effort to satisfy wealthy, upper class people with the very first official “premium” brand. Believe it or not, the name “Pall Mall” is derived from a 17th century game.

The object of this game was that the player had to try guiding a wooden ball that had a mallet through a lane that had an elevated ring. The player was required to make as few strokes as possible during gameplay. The name originates in Latin; “palla” and “malleus”, when directly translated into English, mean “ball” and “hammer”. Also, Pall Mall happens to be the name of an immensely exclusive, wealthy street found in the West End of London, England.

History

In the year 1907, Pall Mall, with a trade of Butler & Butler, was bought out by American Tobacco. Pall Mall’s new proprietors employed their premium brand in their venture to assess probable improvements in the product’s design. One example of these innovations was the then “king-size” (today, measuring 85mm, it is considered to be the normal size for cigarettes) cigarettes. This was allegedly a new concept for stuffing tobacco that made smoking less stressful for people’s throats.

By the beginning of 1960, the Pall Mall cigarette brand had finally reached its peak in popularity and was officially known as the number one cigarette you could buy in America. The success with Pall Mall confirmed that the risk they took with changing their design concepts was worth it in the end. Not long afterward, the Pall Mall company released the new “longs”, which were their 100mm cigarettes. Once more, Pall Mall had formed a new standard, only this time, it was for long cigarettes. However, Pall Mall’s place as the #1 cigarette in the United States would eventually fall through. In 1966, the Winston cigarettes brand took first place. Winston cigarettes were released in 1954. The Pall Mall company realized that it would not be able to compete with Winston’s ad campaign, “Winston tastes good like a cigarette should”, any longer.

During the 1940’s, the Pall Mall brand had its own unique slogan (which also happened to be grammatically incorrect). Their motto was, “travels the smoke further”, which was referring to their 85mm length cigarettes. In the 1950’s and early 1960’s, Pall Mall came up with a new slogan that was more well-accepted and popular amongst the American populace. Their new slogan was, “OUTSTANDING…and they are MILD!”.

Pall Mall Gets Bought Out

With the advent of the year 1994, Pall Mall and Lucky Strike were both bought out by a company known as the Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corporation. This transference of ownership was due to the fact that the previous American Tobacco company had halted all production within the tobacco industry and moved on to other things.
