Oklahoma Aquarium History

It all started with an idea written on a napkin. Back in 1984, two men named Dr. P.R. Ramey and Doug Kemper put their heads together brainstorming on how they could create an aquarium unlike any other. Their desire was to create not just an impressive selection of aquatic wildlife, but they shared a passion to make the public aware of the “Conservation through education” aspect of the millions of species and creatures that swim and live on this vast earth’s oceans and seas. “Conservation through education” is the mission statement of the Oklahoma Aquarium.

The Oklahoma Aquarium is a non-profit aquarium open to the public and dedicated to educate their visitors about the important roles aquatic life forms play in the health of our planet.

With enlightening exhibits and educational programs, up-close and at times hands-on experiences with aquatic life, the Oklahoma Aquarium hopes its visitors will come away with a greater appreciation and understanding of the many fish, corals, sharks, and other aquatic species that live in our world’s waters.

With almost a half million visitors every year, including many thousands of school children, the Oklahoma Aquarium is fulfilling its mission of “Conservation through Education” every day.

The Oklahoma Aquarium displays over 200 exhibits that feature thousands of fresh and salt water species, including mammals. There are beautiful seahorses and graceful sharks that swim directly overhead and next to you in the transparent tunnels. Their are dwarf seahorses and shark feeding which is quite an experience; sharks gather around the diver as he throws them food.

You can watch the Jellyfish float around, and see the sponges, starfish, electric eels, corals, octopus, and giant bass. The children will love the hands on exhibits.

Recently there was a press announcement that the Oklahoma Aquarium had bull shark breeding activity, and a confirmed fertilization. Apparently, this is a first in the world.

The staff and employees at the Oklahoma Aquarium treat their guests like royalty! The educators, greeters, and even the divers within the tanks who play with the children as they swim around with the fish are all kind, courteous, and professional.
