Information about Niagra Falls

Niagara Falls is a series of extremely large waterfalls that flow on the Niagara River. The Niagara River straddles the borders of Ontario, Canada, and New York. The falls are located roughly 17 miles from Buffalo, New York, and 75 miles from Toronto, and are between Niagara Falls, New York, and Niagara Falls, Ontario. The falls are composed of two sections that are separated by an island, which is housed mostly on the Canadian side, and the American Falls is in America, and is separated by another island.

The falls were formed when glacier formations receded at the end of the last ice age, and the water from the Great Lakes pushed water through the Niagara Escarpment, while on the way to the Atlantic Ocean. The falls are not very tall, but are extremely wide. Over 6 million cubic feet of water flows over the falls during the high flow season, and close to 4 million cubic feet falls during normal seasons. These facts make it the most powerful waterfall in North America. The falls are admired for their beauty, as well as a source for power. Figuring out how to balance the industrial, commercial, and recreational aspects of the falls has been a problem of the stewards of the falls since the early 1800s.

The Niagara Falls is divided into the American Falls and the Horseshoe Falls. Both of the falls have a drop near 100 feet. The Horseshoe Falls are the larger of the two falls. The volumes achieve their highest during the function of Lake Erie in the late summer. An enormous glacier created the features over 200 million years ago. The general consensus among scientists is that an old valley lies underneath the Welland Canal. The ice from the glaciers melted into the Niagara River, and followed the Niagara Escarpment. The river eventually cut through a cliff. However, the rock did not erode evenly, and the Niagara Falls was created. The top part of the rock formation was made out of limestone, which does not erode easily, and dolostone. The dolostone layer eroded faster than the limestone, which created Niagara Falls as we know it today.

Below the rock formation, which makes up most of the cliff, the weaker rock formations lie. This rock was composed mostly of shale. However, some thin limestone layers were scattered throughout the formation as well. In addition, ancient fossils were found to lie underneath the layers of the rock. After being barraged by water, the wearing away of the soft layers underneath eventually forced the hard top layers to collapse. This collapse is what carved out the Falls.

Many different theories exist dictating the origin of the Falls’ name. Some scholars maintain that the term was given to a branch of the Neutral Confederacy, who were sometimes known as the “Niagagarega”. Some records suggest the first sighting of the Falls being around 1604 during an exploration of the Canadian wilderness. Tourism grew during the 18th century, even hosting Napoleon Bonaparte’s brother for a time. After the Civil War, the Falls were known as a fantastic honeymoon location. This lead to increased railroad traffic, which helped to supplement America’s growing economy.
