Background Information on Navy Pier

Navy Pier, Chicagoland’s historic lakefront center for entertainment, amusements, and art, is a perfect family day any time of the year. Extending into Lake Michigan, Navy Pier is a tradition that builds memories for all those who visit.

Pier Park, an outdoor amusement park, features classic rides such as a 150-foot high Ferris wheel modeled after the very first Ferris wheel built in 1893 for the Chicago World’s Columbian Exposition. A musical carousel reminiscent of Chicago’s golden age brings back the same whimsical enjoyment as the original ride which stood in the 1920’s. Finally, the Wave Swinger towers 40 feet high over a pond of water, offering an exhilarating ride.

Other amusements to be found in Pier Park are 18 holes of miniature golf, remote control boats for visitors to maneuver for a dollar, and the Light Tower Ride – a thirteen foot tall tower that bounces riders to the top and bounces them back down! Loose shoes must be removed so that riders aren’t bounced right out of them.

Navy Pier is a great place for kids. The Children’s Museum is a hands-on blend of interactive exhibits and innovative education. Children learn math, science, reading, and cultures while building, creating, and inventing. A new exhibit, Play it Safe, teaches children about fire safety as they step into the boots of a firefighter, learning through play.

But Navy Pier is not just for kids. The Smith Museum of Stained Glass Windows houses a permanent display of 150 beautiful stained glass windows in an 800-ft. long series of galleries. For the more adventurous visitor the Navy Pier AeroBalloon or Transporter FX offer thrill rides or get lost in Amazing Chicago’s Funhouse Maze, 4000 square feet of dramatic and sometimes disorienting sensory experiences.

Being on the move at Navy Pier is easy with either Bike and Roll or Segway Experience tours. With Bike and Roll, visitors can choose from a selection of new bikes and skates, either biking on their own or joining a tour. Tours depart daily starting Memorial Day. Group discounts are available and safety gear is provided. Segway Experience, the only Segway-authorized touring company offers two-hour guided tours of some of the most breathtaking views Chicago has to offer.

Food at Navy Pier is a matter of variety. Not only are there numerous different restaurants to choose from but the Family Pavilion’s food court offers many great tastes as well as shopping along the Arcade.
