The History of Joe’s Crab Shack
Joe’s Crab Shack began in Houston, Texas in 1991, after two friends enjoyed a summer touring the Gulf coast. During their travels, they visited numerous crab shacks, satiating their hunger but developing a desire for their own crab house. The three-restaurant chain remained Houston-based until 1994, when Landry Restaurants, Inc. acquired the name and chain. By 1996, Joe’s Crab Shack had sold 21 million pounds of crab and was still growing. In 2002 alone, 21 new locations opened. Joe’s is known for its laid-back atmosphere and abundant seafood menu. Part of its revenue is generated through the sale of novelty T-shirts; in 2006, the chain sold its millionth tie dye shirt. Also in 2006, the chain was sold to J.H. Whitney and Company for over $190 million.
Joe’s Crab Shack Specialties
As indicated by the name, Joe’s Crab Shack is known for its numerous crab entrees. Its crab options include Dungeness crab, Alaskan snow crab, and king crab. It also has a number of shrimp, lobster, and fish meals. There are a variety of non-seafood entrees on its menus as well. For customers with a larger appetite, Joe’s offers buckets of crab and steampots, which include crab, crawfish, lobster, and more. The restaurant also has signature cocktails, such as the Category 5 Hurricane and the Shark Bite. Items on the menu that are notoriously popular are marked as “Joe’s Favorites”.
Famous Joe’s Crab Shack Locations
The original restaurant sites in Houston, Texas, are considered the most famous of the chain. A San Diego Joe’s was built from the former San Diego Rowing Club Boathouse; this building was deemed a historical landmark in 1975.
Seasonal Celebrations at Joe’s Crab Shack
Seasonal events can vary with each Joe’s location. In 2008 at the Dallas-Fort Worth location, Joe’s Crab Shack partnered with Toys for Tots as a toy drop off site. Additionally, it donated 10% of each guest check to the Toys for Tots Foundation. In the beginning of 2009, Joe’s offered “Bonus Bucks” to customers who purchased gift cards. The “Bonus Bucks” were redeemable towards the customers’ next restaurant visit. Joe’s Crab Shack also has offered summer fare, such as BBQ crab, shrimp, and mussels.
