History of the Home Depot

Founded in 1971 by Bernie Marcus and Arthur Blank, The Home Depot is one of the fastest growing and largest home supply stores. The first two stores opened on June 22, 1979 in Atlanta, Georgia. The Home Depot dwarfed all other hardware stores with its 60,000 square feet of space, massive shelves and storage, and its large amount of product.

In 1981, Home Depot went public on the NASDAQ. In addition, the 1908s were a time of tremendous growth. The Home Depot began to build stores throughout the United States and soon became a household name. In 1984, The Home Depot moved to the New York Stock Exchange. This growth continued into the 1990s when it expanded out of the United States into Canada and then into Mexico in 2001. In 2006, the company purchased a line of stores in China called The Home Way.

The Home Depot sells a large array of home improvement products including: lumber, plumbing and bath items, paint, flooring, countertops, cabinets, electrical equipment and almost every tool imaginable. In addition, Home Depot sells appliances, seasonal decorations, grills, fire pits, plants and more. Home Depot has made one stop shopping possible and virtually effortless.

One of the reasons The Home Depot has been so successful is due to its customer service, values, and respect for people. The mission of the store is to put employees and customers first, while management rests at the bottom of the pyramid. The Home Depot has earned the reputation as a great place to work and shop, sponsoring and employing numerous Olympic athletes along the way.
