The History of Fresh Step

Using science to improve the quality of cat litter, the Clorox Company of Oakland, California, introduced Fresh Step Cat Litter in 1984. Clorox, well-known for its popular bleach, had been an innovator in marketing laundry and home cleaning products since the early 1900s.

Fresh Step produces four types of cat litter in Regular, Blends, Multiple Cat, and Free formulas:

1. Clay Litter—Contains carbon to eliminate odor and is 30 percent lighter than the leading competitor’s brand of clay litter.
2. Scoopable Litter—Also contains carbon with the added bonus of allowing you to scoop out the source of odor. The litter box stays fresh for a month without changing.
3. Scented Scoopable Litter—A scoopable litter with a choice of Lavender Valley or Mountain Forest scents. Fresheners are activated with each step of your cat’s paws.
4. Crystals—99 percent dust-free, lightweight crystals that last over seven times longer than the leading competitor’s brand of clay litter.

Fresh step also produces Litter Box Fresheners that absorb odor upon contact with crystals. They come in the same Lavender Valley and Mountain Forest scents as the Scented Scoopable Litter.

Litter Box Wipes, another Fresh Step product, are safe to use around cats to wipe away waste and litter residue.

Fresh Step’s promotions and rewards programs are found at its official website. The consumer creates an account by registering online with a valid e-mail address and password.

Fresh Step’s continuing promo is “Paw Points, The Club for Cats” program. Club members earn and redeem “Paw Points” for rewards of their choice. You earn 10 points simply by registering and another 20 points for completing a brief online survey. “Paw Points” codes are found on specially marked Fresh Step Cat Litter products. When you purchase a product bearing a code, just enter the code in the “Add Points” section of the Fresh Step website. Each code entry adds 20 points to your account.

You can redeem “Paw Points” for rewards appealing to cat lovers, including personalized photo prints or calendars, cat care books, catnip toys, packages of litter, or chances to win valuable prizes, such as a “kittywalk.” In addition, every month through September 30, 2010, you can redeem “Paw Points” to enter Fresh Step’s monthly sweepstakes. The sweepstakes prizes are drawn randomly.

“Paw Points” accounts expire after a year of inactivity, so it’s important to login regularly.

A current Fresh Step promo is a game called “Ginger’s Lost & Found Instant Win Challenge—Help Ginger Find Her Litter Box.” Because Fresh Step so successfully controls litter box odor, neither Ginger nor even her Bloodhound friend can smell her litter box. Players click on the animals’ pictures and drag them to the room of the house where they think they’ll find Ginger’s litter box.
