Fancy Feast Information

The Ralston Purina Company has always been known for its iconic branding. From the early checkerboard on everything from dog food to cereal through Maude the Mule and the Energizer bunny, the images are branded in American hearts and minds with great nostalgia. Taking a winding, twisting road, Purina has emerged as the world’s leading dog and cat product manufacturer.

The company was founded in 1894 by William H. Danforth in St. Louis Missouri. His first product was a horse feed mix that was advertised as “cheaper than oats and safer than corn”. Mixed with shovels on a barn floor, it was poured in 175 pound sacks and hand sewn shut. The product was sold in feed stores that dotted the landscape like filling stations do today.

Similarly, as a lifelong health advocate, Danforth began producing a cereal from whole grains milled in a special process that protected it from rancidity. After agreeing to change the name of his product to Ralston Purina, he received a ringing endorsement from a health promoter of the 1890s, Albert Wester Edgerly. Edgerly was known as “Dr. Ralston” to his loyal and ardent followers. In 1994, Ralston Purina spun off it human grocery food business into a freestanding company called Ralcorp.

The pet food division never slowed down from its humble beginnings of horse feed. It had early on branched out into manufacturing and producing food for different farm animals always called “Chow”. From that time forward, for 75 years, the Purina Company put their wealth of expertise about pets to work providing healthy pet food and products. In 2001, Ralston Purina merged with Swiss-based Nestlé S.A., the world’s largest food company, and Nestle Purina Pet Care was founded. The company promotes humane education in responsible pet care, and fosters the positive bond between owner and pet. Their company website offers enrichment articles, advice, coupons and a variety of means to better pets’ lives. The American headquarters of Nestle Purina is located in Checkerboard Square in St. Louis, Missouri.

One of their most well-known and bestselling products is the Fancy Feast brand of cat food. Fancy Feast is considered a “gourmet” cat food and comes in over fifty different varieties. First introduced in 1982, their “Elegant Medleys” brand of Fancy Feast was presented at Aspen’s Food & Wine Classic in 2006. Fancy Feast is packaged in both dry and canned varieties. The last entry into the Fancy Feast family are the Fancy Feast Appetizers which are a supplemental treat for a favorite feline.
