Charlotte Russe History

Charlotte Russe was founded with just one clothing store in Carlsbad, California, by Daniel Lawrence in 1975. The store was named after the famous French desert made from ladyfinger cakes and cream. In 1996, Charlotte Russe was bought by an investment company named Sanders, Karp and Megrue, and the new owners of the brand set into motion a huge expansion drive. There are now more than 460 stores nationwide and the company has around 2,000 employees.

The public company, which has its headquarters in San Diego, California, recently recruited House of Payne actress and former Miss USA, Susie Castillo, as brand ambassador. She is set to design a Latino-influenced clothing line with Gossip Girl stylist Eric Daman.

The Charlotte Russe chain aims to attract fashion conscious women to its stores, where they can buy trendy clothing, footwear and accessories. The store’s target consumers are women in their teens, twenties or early thirties – and shoppers looking for that special party dress or a couple of casual tops will be able to find both styles of clothing through Charlotte Russe’s doors. The store has its own brand label, but also sells under the Refuge and Blu Chic labels, and all women are catered for, with sizes ranging from extra small to extra large. For example, the store stocks jeans from sizes 0 to 15.

Popular Charlotte Russe locations

It’s easier to say which states don’t have a Charlotte Russe store, than it is to list all the ones that do. Only Alaska, Idaho, Montana, and North Dakota don’t yet have a Charlotte Russe location within their states. But they are in the minority.

All the other states can boast of at least one Charlotte Russe store, while many of them have numerous stores on Main Streets throughout their cities. For example, California has a staggering 57 of the chain’s locations, with stores in Fresno, Ontario, and Palm Desert, as well as the flagship store in Carlsbad and the popular location in Burbank Town Center on Magnolia Blvd.

On the other side of the country, over on the east coast, the state of New York has 28 stores, including several locations in NYC, such as the branches in Manhattan and Queens.
